OTT Video Self-Assessment
Where did you create this artifact?
This is a blog I wrote for Internet Evolution about IPTV startup Aereo and their innovative over the top delivery method of local broadcast media. Aereo is a company attempting to deliver local broadcast video OTT to end customers via an innovative antenna array which links each customer to a single element in the array. Aereo’s hope is that this one to one ratio will allow them to get around paying any retransmission fees to the broadcasters.
What did you learn?
Though the technology being used by Aereo is not really new, the implementation of it is unique, while doing research for this blog it was very interesting to see how they were able to put together their business model in a way that would allow them to skirt around the current laws surrounding retransmission of broadcast media.
How did you learn this?
The majority of the research for the blog was done via internet resources, while much of the legal research was done via interview of lawyers and paralegals who were able to offer some insight into the case. I also spoke with the compliance officer for a US cable provider who was able to give his take on what might come of the legal battle being fought over Aereo.
How will you apply this?
One of the main things I was able to take away from my experience writing this blog was that even utilizing existing technology in a unique way can be very disruptive to an industry and be the catalyst for growth within a field. Even if Aereo ends up being shut down they have impacted the industry.
What challenges & obstacles did you overcome?
The biggest challenge when doing research for this blog was to look at it with two hats, one looking at it from the technology side and the other from the legal side. Though they both impact each other they have to be treated separately to really get a grasp of what Aereo is doing to the industry.
